Job Title: Custodian

Position Summary: The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly school environment that supports student learning and staff effectiveness. This role involves daily cleaning, basic maintenance, and ensuring school facilities meet health and safety standards.

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Clean and sanitize classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, cafeteria, and common areas daily.

• Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and polish floors, furniture, and fixtures.

• Empty trash and recycling; replace liners and dispose of waste properly.

• Refill restroom and classroom supplies (soap, paper towels, toilet paper).

• Set up and break down furniture for school events, meetings, and activities.

• Perform routine maintenance tasks (changing light bulbs, minor repairs, tightening fixtures).

• Report maintenance issues, safety hazards, or needed repairs to supervisors.

• Operate cleaning equipment such as floor buffers scrubbers and vacuums.

• Assist with snow removal and exterior grounds maintenance as needed.

• Follow district safety procedures and proper handling of cleaning chemicals.

• Support emergency procedures (spill cleanup, weather events, lockdown protocols).

 

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED.

• Prior custodial or facilities experience preferred.

• Knowledge of cleaning methods, chemicals, and equipment.

• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks (standing, bending, climbing).

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.

• Basic communication skills and professionalism when interacting with students and staff.

 

Work Environment:

• Indoor and outdoor school environments.

• Exposure to cleaning chemicals and physical labor.

• May require evening, overnight, or weekend shifts.

• Seasonal weather exposure for outdoor duties.

 

Salary & Benefits:
Competitive hourly wage or salary based on experience; benefits may include health insurance, retirement plans, paid leave, and holiday pay.

 

 

Contract Terms: The Custodian works throughout the year (52 weeks/260 days) to assist with custodial duties in the building.  Vacation and paid leave days available.
